Department of Community Medicine
Introduction
The department of Community Medicine deals with teaching of social and preventive medicine to medical graduates, postgraduates, nursing students and students of various other paramedical courses being run in the institute. There are two health centres one each in rural and urban area attached to the department for teaching of the students in the field. As socio-demographic factors play important role in health and disease, the students are taken to the community. It not only improves their understanding of various diseases and their preventive aspects but also enhances their communication skill. High quality infrastructure and dedicated and skilled teachers of the department contribute to achieve the goals.
The department is running two health centres and an Immunization Clinic:
Urban Health Centre is located near the historical Gurudwara Shahidan Sahib, at a distance of approximately 8 kms from the Medical College, Vallah. It subserves an urban population of around 15,000 in the various scattered slum areas. It offers various health services like daily OPD with free dispensing of common medication, distribution of iron & folic and tablets, immunization services both under NIS which are provided free of cost & the special vaccines which are administered at subsidized rates. Family planning services are also provided free of cost.
Rural Health Centre is located in village Mallunangal at a distance of 25 kms from the Medical College. It is a Residential Centre which provides comprehensive health services e.g. The OPD with free medicine dispensing, immunization services, family planning services etc. It subserves a population of around 30,000 in 10 villages. The centre also possesses a minor operation theatre for carrying out minor procedures and emergency suturing etc.
An immunization clinic is being run in Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital Vallah providing all vaccines.
