Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology at Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research has a long-standing legacy of excellence in eye care, education, and research. The department was established at the inception of the institute, initially functioning as an outdoor dispensary in the Sarai at the Golden Temple complex. It was later shifted to the old hospital near Chatiwind, where it operated as part of the dental wing.

In 1986, the department became independent with the establishment of a dedicated Eye OPD and surgical facilities. Subsequently, in 1998, it was formally integrated with the Medical College, marking a significant milestone in its academic and clinical growth.

A postgraduate training program was introduced in 2008, further strengthening the department’s commitment to academic excellence and specialized training.

The department has played an active role in advancing ophthalmic education and research by hosting several prestigious scientific meetings, including the Annual National Ocular Trauma Society of India Conference (2014) and the Annual Punjab Ophthalmological Society Conference (2009).

It is one of the four institutes in India approved by the All India Ophthalmological Society and the Ocular Trauma Society of India for conducting Post-PG Fellowship programs in Ocular Trauma.

Faculty members of the department are regularly invited as guest speakers, panelists, faculty members, and chairpersons at international, national, and regional conferences, reflecting their academic standing and expertise.
